Nothing is safer than backing up your data. Anything, from simple errors to catastrophic system failures, is a constant possibility. Because you can never predict when something like this may happen, software which automatically perform backup jobs are more than welcomed. KLS Backup 2011 Standard is one such software. It can be used to back up your data to a place on your hard drive, your local area network, a FTP or WebDAV server and more.

Downloading the software should take a few seconds due to the light weight of the installation kit (approx. 7 Mb). During the setup, you will only have to specify where to install the software.

The software's interface may discourage you at first, due to its complex look. But if you are familiar with how a backup program works, you should not have any problems with this one. Like with other similar software, you will have to create one or more profiles by clicking on a toolbar button. A small window will show up where you can choose between a simple backup, synchronization or a cleanup task.

Except for a few differences, the wizard for each type of profile will be the same. You can navigate through its steps via Next or Back buttons, or you can directly jump to a certain step by using the navigation pane in the upper left corner of the wizard's window. You can go through each step in a logical order, so creating a backup profile is easy. First, you need to specify what data you want backed up by selecting a source folder. Alternatively, you can choose from pre-set items, such as registry keys, libraries or settings from programs or browsers, and the list goes on. The next step is setting a destination which can be a place on your hard drive, LAN, CD/DVD or you can upload it to a FTP, WebDAV, Azure or Amazon S3 storage server. Setting these steps is mandatory. The software won't allow you to go any further before you specify a source, a destination and a name for the profile.

The rest of the steps can be skipped. These allow you to compress the data when backing it up, create logs, set pre and post actions, such as running or closing a program or service, schedule the backup process and more. When you are done with the wizard, the profile will be displayed on a list in the main window. Selecting it and clicking the Run button from the toolbar will start the set backup process immediately. If you have created a schedule during its setup, you can just let KLS Backup run in the system tray and it automatically backs up your data according to that schedule.

Setting up a synchronization profile works the same way. The difference is that you have to specify a left and a right folder and then select one or more actions. These actions will automatically copy their contents from one side to another so that the folders will stay synchronized. Creating a cleanup profile requires specifying a folder which you want cleaned up and make a few settings, similar to the ones you can find while creating a backup or synchronization profile.

Pros

Due to the wide variety of options it offers, the program is very flexible when it comes to creating a backup, synchronization or cleanup profile.

Cons

Although you can choose to back up a pre-set item from the list, like a program or an application, KLS Backup will not scan for other third party software. You can back up your data or synchronize your files with maximum efficiency when using KLS Backup 2011 Standard. Its wizards will guide you all the way to securing your data by saving it on your local network, uploading it to a server and more.
